Nepal is a multilingual country with over 123 languages spoken throughout the country. The official language of Nepal is Nepali, which is spoken by a majority of the population. Other major languages spoken in Nepal include Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Tamang, Newari, Gurung, Magar, and Awadhi. In addition to these mainstream languages, there are also numerous local dialects spoken in different regions of the country. The government of Nepal recognizes 19 languages as national languages, including Nepali and other regional languages. However, many of these languages are endangered and are at risk of disappearing as younger generations are adopting Nepali as their primary language.
